Mayor Proposes TDD, Sales Tax Increase to Repair Bagnell Dam Boulevard

Some residents in Lake Ozark may have a chance to vote on a sales tax increase to help pay for repairs to Bagnell Dam Boulevard.

Mayor Gerry Murawski proposes using the funds generated by the formation of a Transportation Development District to repave the road, construct a parking garage, and continue financing the Bagnell Dam Strip Express bus line. The pavement alone is estimated to cost about $3 million. Only voters within the proposed district will be able to vote on the sales tax. If the ballot language is approved it could go before voters in April.

Could a "destination" soccer tournament complex be the reason people come to the Lake of the Ozarks before and after the boating season? The Lake of the Ozarks Convention and Visitor Bureau thinks it is possible, citing a 2016 feasibility study that suggests such a venue could bring up to $75 million per year in economic impact to the Lake area.

Next week, the City of Camdenton and the CVB will be hosting two public meetings for anyone interested in the possibility of the projects to learn more:

Camdenton -- 6 – 7:30 p.m. on Monday, August 20, 2018 @ The Exchange, 57 Court Circle, S.W., Camdenton, MO

Lake Ozark -- 9 – 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 @ The Lodge at Port Arrowhead, 3080 Bagnell Dam Blvd., Lake Ozark, MO 65065

There will be a short presentation by the five-member team of XO Strategic, the company conducting the project analysis, followed by an open question-and-answer period. All residents, athletes, athletic and/or youth organizations, media, business owners and/or organizational and community leaders with an interest in a potential destination tournament soccer complex in the Lake Area are encouraged to attend.

"The CVB and Tri County Lodging Association (TCLA) have been studying for quite some time how we could bring additional visitors to the Lake of the Ozarks and increase the economic activity of the whole Lake Area," the CVB said in a press released. In 2016 the CVB completed a two-phase feasibility study conducted by Convention & Sports Leisure (CSL) on recreational complexes, which indicated the Lake Area could support a destination tournament soccer complex with 12-14 tournaments with 50-300 teams each weekend in the spring and again in the fall. The study estimated this would have a $75 million economic impact annually for the Lake area.

Since the completion of the feasibility study, the CVB, TCLA and the City of Camdenton have been working with Greg Cotton, the recent CEO of Sporting Kansas City, and his firm XO Strategic to complete the project analysis to determine if the Lake can indeed support what the CVB called an "enormous opportunity."
